Aliakmonas river is the longest, in northern Greece, with a total length of approximately 297 km. It springs from the mountains of the eastern Pindus Range and it flows southeast through gentle valleys and basins where it is joined by a tributary, sometimes also called Aliakmonas. Near Véroia the Aliákmon is joined by another tributary, the Moglenítsas, which drains the entire western Thessaloníki plain and together they empty into the upper Gulf of Thermaikos on the Aegean Sea.
